Get Your Side Hustle On

With current events preventing some from working, and causing others to work a lot less, now may be a good time to consider exploring a side hustle. To clear things up, by side hustle, we mean a “sideline that brings in cash; something other than your main job”. And since we’re all at home getting bored, why not consider taking up a side project? This could be in the form of working freelance, tutoring on a subject that you excel in, or even laying down the groundwork to start a business of your own (which won’t happen overnight, so don’t stress if you’re not done by the time you return to your normal job!). With all the technology in the world, all you need is a computer and a willingness to search out some new opportunities.

Freelancing

If you’re looking to launch your career as a freelancer, there are tons of websites online where you can look for paying gigs. These websites allow businesses to post their freelance positions online, and all freelancers have to do is apply. If the company likes your background, they’ll hire you for whatever job they need done. Two of the more popular freelancing websites are UPWORK and FREELANCER. Either (or both!) of these would be the perfect place to start your side hustle adventure.

Tutoring

If you excel in a particular subject, you could use that knowledge to your advantage and start tutoring online. Kids everywhere are home-schooling. That means that they may not be getting as much one-on-one time with their teachers as they need. This could cause them to fall behind. With the assistance of a good tutor, kids will be able to keep up in school, despite having to do their schoolwork under such unusual circumstances. If you think tutoring is the side hustle for you, check out THIS list of the best online tutoring websites.

Starting a Business

If you’re feeling extremely ambitious, you may want to consider exploring the idea of starting your own business. If that’s something you’ve always wanted to do, what better time to start? This won’t bring any immediate cash your way like a normal side hustle would, but with enough diligence and passion, this could really pay off in the long run. A great place to start would be by taking some classes on how to start a business. THESE classes, offered for free online by Khan Academy, give students some business basics. They even have some classes on freelancing in this program. If you’re looking to use this time to make a big change in your life, maybe learning about starting a business is the best option for you.

Whatever it is that will bring you some joy or excitement, always be sure to pursue it. Whether it be tutoring, freelancing, or something completely different, if it’s something you want to do, then do it. At NPU, that’s what we do.
